EERA is a partnership body bringing together elected councillors from the region's 54 councils (counties, boroughs, districts and unitary councils) and representatives from the region’s private, voluntary and community sectors.
The assembly has 105 members, of which two thirds are elected councillors and one third are these "stakeholder" representatives.
EERA is the regional planning body for the East of England and has a statutory duty to prepare and implement the Regional Spatial Strategy known as the East of England Plan.
The East of England covers the counties of Hertfordshire, Essex, Cambridgeshire, Norfolk and Suffolk and the unitary authorities of Central Bedfordshire, Luton, Peterborough, Thurrock and Southend.
